The Sol Top is a classic tank top knitted in all over stocking stitch with folded trim straps. The simplicity of the shape and stitch allows for experimentation with yarns and colours. We have knitted ours with 2 colours held together to create a marled effect, and also experimented with a striped scrap yarn version. 

 

Knitted in one piece from the bottom up, the Sol Top is knitted in the round until reaching the armhole, then worked flat on half of the stitches to form the back and then the front. Stitches are picked up around the armholes and trims knitted in the round, casting off whilst folding the trim in half. 

 

This pattern provides easy to follow detailed instructions using the following techniques: 

Long tail cast on, knitting in the round, knitting flat, knit, purl, stocking stitch, decreasing, folded cast off, picking up stitches, cable cast on.

Skill Level: Easy. 

 

Sizing: 8 sizes (XS-4X) see size guide. Alice wears size 2 (S).

 

Yarn: Fingering weight yarn approx 50g/250m. 2 strands held together throughout. 

Per colour you will need approx 85g/425m [96g/480m, 110g/550m, 125g/625m, 140g/700m, 155g/775m, 170g/850m, 190g/950m].

 

For the pink/white top we have used: 

2 [2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4] balls of Knitting For Olive Pure Silk, raspberry pink - 100% silk. (250m/273yds per 50g ball.)

held together with....

2 [2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4] balls of Knitting For Olive Cotton Merino, natural white - 70% Organic Cotton, 30% Merino Wool. (250m/273yds per 50g ball.)

 

Other yarn suggestions:

CaMaRose Pimabomuld 2/8. (200m/218yds per 50g ball.)

Scheepjes Organicon. (170m/185yds per 50g ball.)

 

OR you can use 1 strand of a heavy DK weight yarn, approx 50g/105m. 

 

For the striped scrap top we have used approx:

5 [5, 6, 6, 7, 8, 9, 9] balls of Stylecraft Naturals Organic Cotton DK- 100% Organic Cotton. (105m/115yds per 50g skein.)

 

Other yarn suggestions:
Rico Essentials Organic Cotton DK (105m/115yds per 50g skein.)
Cascade Ultra Pima (200m/230yds per 100g skein.)
Drops Muskat. (100m/110yds per 50g skein.)

 

Suggested Needle Size: 

4.5mm/US 7 circular knitting needles, length 60- 80cm/24-32''.

 

Gauge:  Stocking Stitch using 4.5mm/US 7 knitting needles:

10cm/4'' x 10cm/4'' = 19.5sts x 26 rows
